users of the markets are quick to dismiss catalog retailers (mouser, digikey, etc.) as "too expensive".

for example

ATTINY85-20SU

offers start getting interesting above the 100pcs mark.
on octoparts we found Avent to be the cheapest, but shipping takes its toll (usually large distributors don't offer "regular" cheap mail options as they are used to work with large corporations, that have their own courier mail accounts.

octoparts didn't give me the whole picture, I was especially interested in Mouser, which historically gave us best prices when we used the ATtiny85 for the ATtami project.
this is an issue as IC prices fluctuate based on demand and other variables.
